Transforming Education
Across an Entire Island
Inside Guernsey’s journey to a consistent,
future-ready digital ecosystem
Schools everywhere are being asked to modernise digital learning while
ensuring equity, consistency and long-term value. For the States of
Guernsey, this was never about refreshing individual classrooms. Instead,
the goal was to deliver meaningful change across the entire education
system, spanning the whole island.
Guernsey’s education network includes primary, secondary and special
schools across 19 maintained institutions. Leaders recognised that
ageing interactive boards and inconsistent technology were holding
lessons back and adding pressure for teachers. To support inclusive,
high-quality teaching, the island set out to create a shared digital
foundation that would work for every school, every classroom and every
learner.
Professional development played a central role. More than 400 staff took
part in CPD programmes, combining in-person training, online resources
and peer mentoring. Digital champions in each school helped build
confidence and ensure new practices became part of everyday teaching.
Addressing Fragmented
Classroom Technology
Before the transformation began, schools were using a mix of outdated AV
tools with limited interactivity. Teaching experiences varied from room to
room, and staff often had to adapt lessons to fit the technology available
rather than the needs of students. For learners with additional needs, this
lack of consistency made participation even harder. Rather than opting for
short-term upgrades, Guernsey took a long-term, pedagogy-led approach.
The focus was on establishing an island-wide standard that could support
modern teaching practices while creating a stable platform for future digital
development.
Impact Seen Across Classrooms
and Communities
The results were quickly felt. Headteachers described the rollout as
“revolutionary”, with teachers and students engaging confidently from the
first day. Lessons became more interactive, collaboration increased and
quieter students were more willing to take part.
Ongoing training and peer support helped teachers use digital tools more
effectively, shifting the focus away from technical issues and back to
teaching and learning. At the same time, centralised management reduced
maintenance demands and supported improved energy efficiency.
Beyond daily lessons, the displays are now used for staff meetings, student
presentations and parent events, strengthening schools’ connection with
their wider communities.
A Sustainable Model for
System-wide Transformation
Delivering an Integrated,
Island-wide Solution
Working with ViewSonic, the States of Guernsey rolled out a unified solution
across more than 330 classrooms. This included over 500 ViewBoard
interactive displays, supported by myViewBoard digital whiteboarding
software and Manager Advanced for centralised device management.
Instead of deploying standalone tools, the solution was designed as an
integrated ecosystem. ViewBoard interactive displays could be used flexibly
as connected screens, standalone Android systems or collaborative teaching
hubs. myViewBoard provided a familiar, easy-to-use environment for
annotation and collaboration, integrating smoothly with Google tools to
reduce disruption in the classroom.
Manager Advanced allowed IT teams to monitor devices remotely, manage
updates and maintain consistent performance across schools, saving time
and improving operational efficiency.
Guernsey’s experience shows how digital transformation works best when
technology supports pedagogy and long-term policy goals. By focusing on
consistency, inclusion and teacher confidence, the island has built a digital
foundation that can support learning across diverse school settings.
The initiative has been shortlisted for the Bett Awards 2026 in the
Transformational Impact category, recognising its system-level impact and
emphasis on equity and sustainable digital practice. As Guernsey continues
its journey, the project offers a practical reference for education systems
looking to scale inclusive digital learning in a meaningful way.
