TINY FACES; BIG EXPRESSIONS:
TRESTLE'S NEW MINI MASK'S
UNLEASHING CREATIVITY IN THE
PRIMARY CLASSROOM
Trestle has been at the forefront of creative expression for over forty years, using masks and
physical theatre to unlock creative potential in educational settings. Their latest offering—the
Mini Mask set—is a testament to their commitment to inclusive, transformative learning.
Developed alongside the Paul Hamlyn Foundation's two year Create, Speak, Thrive project,
Trestle Theatre Company's Mini Masks represent a brand new tool for primary education. This
exciting project emerged from an extensive collaborative research and development process,
generously supported by Arts Council England; developed in close partnership with five schools
across the Three Counties: Merchant Taylors' School, The Ferrars Academy, Roebuck Academy,
Maple Cross JMI and Nursery, and Scott Primary.
The Power of Mask Learning
Designed specifically for children aged 5-11, these Mini Masks are more than just a teaching tool –
they are a gateway to transformed learning experiences. As one Year 5 class teacher noted,
"I thought this was a really interesting and valuable tool for the children and one that might be
particularly valuable for those with special educational needs."
The Mini Masks set provides educators with an innovative approach to addressing some of the
most critical areas of primary education. Carefully crafted to support curriculum delivery, these
masks offer targeted support in three key areas:
1. Oracy and Vocabulary Development Masks provide a unique platform for children to
explore language in a safe, supportive environment. By removing the immediate pressure of
personal identity, children are more willing to experiment with words, expression, and
communication.
2. Promoting Social Values Through masked activities, students can explore complex social
concepts from a place of safety and creativity. The masks become a powerful tool for
teaching empathy, understanding different perspectives, and developing crucial social
skills.
3. Emotional Resilience and Wellbeing Perhaps most importantly, the Mini Masks offer a
liberating canvas for emotional exploration. Children who might struggle to express their
feelings can use the masks as a protective barrier, allowing them to communicate more
freely and build confidence.
