New digital
education tool
launched —
helping Wales’ teachers
take learning outdoors
And whether a school is situated in a
designated landscape or an urban town
centre, Tirlun is designed to support
teachers to confidently deliver meaningful outdoor learning anywhere —
from the school yard to nearby woodlands, coastlines, fields and beyond.
What’s more, the portal’s content is free
to access and has been tried and tested
with schools and learners across Wales
— ensuring it is practical, relevant,
and responsive to the needs of today’s
classrooms.
Brand-new bilingual learning portal, Tirlun, has
launched this Wales Outdoor Learning Week (28 April
– 04 May) — giving primary schools across Wales a
powerful new way to bring the Curriculum for Wales
to life, outdoors.
Bryony Rees, Pembrokeshire Outdoor
Schools Co-ordinator, who has been
involved in the portal’s development,
said: “There’s been a clear demand from teachers across Wales
for a resource like Tirlun – something that brings together
high-quality outdoor learning materials in one easy-to-access
place.”
Developed by a team of outdoor learning specialists, and
supported by teachers from across Wales, Tirlun features over
90 ready-to-use, curriculum-aligned activities —designed
to help learners explore their local area, deepen their sense
of ‘cynefin’, and develop essential skills across the Areas of
Learning and Experience (AoLEs).
“What makes Tirlun so powerful is how well it supports the
Curriculum for Wales while staying grounded in the realities
of everyday teaching. It offers flexible, creative ways to take
learning outdoors, and helps children develop a stronger
connection with their place, their identity, and the natural
world.”
The development of Tirlun comes at a time when education,
climate action, and wellbeing are becoming increasingly
interconnected in policy and practice. With the introduction
of the Curriculum for Wales and a growing recognition of
the value of outdoor, place-based learning, there was a clear
opportunity to create a resource that brings these priorities
together.
The portal allows users to filter activities by progression step,
subject area, skill, or local landscape. It also includes printable
resources, teacher notes, interactive presentations and
coverage charts to help schools plan and evaluate their
outdoor learning provision.
